Q. Can you give me an estimate for my project during the initial consultation?
A. Many contractors will provide customers a price without first knowing all the details of that project. At Smith+Baker, upon completion of a detailed landscape plan we can provide you with an accurate estimate in a timely manner.
Q. We know that we cannot afford to do everything at once. Can you still work with us?
A. Yes, many projects are completed in phases. It is critical to have a comprehensive, detailed design to follow throughout all phases of the project. Once the detailed design is created, owners can easily pick and choose which parts are feasible to install now and what can wait for the future.
Q: Can we hire Smith+Baker for design services only?
A. Yes, but it is to your advantage to work with one firm from design to implementation of your project.
Q. What are the fees associated with your design services?
A. Our design fees are based on the amount of time needed to create the Design Development drawings for a project. Please give us a call to setup a meeting to discuss your project. From this meeting we will be able to define the design fees associated with your project.
Q. How much should I budget for an outdoor construction project?
A. The general rule of thumb for budgeting a complete landscape installation or renovation is approximately 2-4% of the overall value of your home and property value. For larger scale projects like pools or outdoor kitchens, it is typical to see an investment value between 10-20% of the home’s value. A well-designed landscape could significantly increase your property value by 10-15%.
Q. How do you evaluate and develop a drainage plan?
A. An analysis of existing site conditions is done to determine where existing water wants to, or needs to go. After reviewing the volume of water that will need to be handled, a detailed drainage solution is created to move the water away from the house or any other problem area. Our initial intent is to always mitigate standing water with surface grade work. If grading is not an option, the option of sub-surface piping is explored.
Q. Why do I need an irrigation system?
A. A properly designed, installed and maintained irrigation system makes efficient use of water resources and can dramatically impact the health and appearance of your landscape. A well designed irrigation system is insurance for your landscape investment.
Q. When is the right time of year to begin a landscape project?
A. We offer landscape design/build, construction, and planting services year round. While spring and fall are traditionally considered the ideal planting seasons, most projects have no significant seasonal limitations.
Q. Can you maintain my landscape after the final installation?
A. Yes – We have a great team of professionals to provide scheduled service for your property. While a growing number of people have become dissatisfied with the poor quality of the typical ‘mow, blow, and go’ service, we take the time to maintain your property to perfection while providing a reliable service you can trust. We focus on your lawn and landscape and proper function of your lighting, irrigation and drainage systems.
Q. Do you provide warranties for your work?
A. We provide a 90-day warranty on all new installed plant materials except seasonal color and a 1-year warranty on trees. Hardscape improvements are warranted for 1 year from the date of each project’s completion, unless otherwise specified. All warranties are dependent on proper homeowner maintenance.
Q. Does your firm carry insurance coverage?
A. Our firm maintains general liability, professional liability, worker’s compensation, and auto liability insurance coverage.
Q: Do you subcontract out large portions of your projects?
A. For specialized installations such as electrical, plumbing, fencing, etc. we will use subcontractors. All of our subcontractors are insured and under our supervision. We only use subcontractors who do work that matches our high quality installations. For our larger projects including pools and outdoor kitchens, we partner with a licensed contractor.

Before we called Smith & Baker, our yard looked like a swamp and was unusable for days after a hard rain. Eric & Justin created an awesome drainage plan and installed it quickly. Everyone kept us informed and up-to-date throughout the entire installation process. Eric & Justin were always easy to reach and always available to answer any of our questions. Now, we are so happy to have a beautiful green yard and not a muddy mess! Smith & Baker’s work is top-notch, and we will definitely be using them again for future projects. These guys are great!
I hired Smith and Baker to put in some drainage in my backyard, near my pool. It flooded every time it rained and my back patio was a muddy mess a lot of the time. Smith and Baker created a drainage system to re-route the water into a drain in our front yard. They were in and out in 2 days and we haven’t had any flooding problems since (this was 3 years ago). They were very professional, speedy and efficient. I’d recommend them to anyone!
